Self-drivingDriver-assistance software
FSD (Supervised)
by Tesla
Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is Tesla software that steers, brakes and speeds up a Tesla owner's car on highways and city streets. The driver must watch the road at all times and stays legally responsible. NHTSA investigation PE25-012, opened 7 Oct 2025

Yes, in places
- Where it works today
- Sold to Tesla owners as a $99-a-month subscription in the US since February 2026; about 1.48 million active subscriptions in mid-2026 (Tesla-reported). Tesla Q2 2026 Update, SEC filing, 22 Jul 2026

02Track record
What has actually happened
Every milestone is dated and links to the page it comes from. Lines marked company-reported rest on the maker's own word.
Mass market
Tesla said cars using FSD (Supervised) had driven more than 10 billion miles in total.

03Safety and incidents
What has gone wrong
NHTSA, the US road-safety agency, opened an investigation into whether FSD can see and react properly when fog, glare or dust make the road hard to see. It covers about 2.4 million cars. NHTSA investigation PE24-031, opened 17 Oct 2024
NHTSA opened an investigation into Teslas on FSD breaking traffic laws, such as going through red lights and driving the wrong way. It covers about 2.9 million cars; NHTSA counted 58 incidents, including 14 crashes or fires and 23 injuries. NHTSA investigation PE25-012, opened 7 Oct 2025
NHTSA, the US road-safety agency, upgraded its probe of FSD in poor visibility to an Engineering Analysis, the last step before a recall, covering 3,203,754 vehicles and nine crashes, one fatal. Electrek, 29 Oct 2026
A Belgian road safety group found that FSD drove over the limit in 55% of the 30 km/h zones it tested in Brussels, averaging 44 km/h. Electrek, 22 Oct 2026
A driver told police he was asleep with FSD engaged before his Tesla hit a patrol car in a lane closure in Fairfield, California, seriously injuring two officers, Electrek reported. Electrek, 26 Oct 2026
Seoul police booked 80 people for using add-on devices to switch on FSD in Teslas not approved for it in South Korea, with police saying safety risks were confirmed. Electrek, 27 Oct 2026
How we placed it
The rule, not an opinion
Stages are worked out by published rules from the dated milestones above. We never rate robots, and no maker can pay to change a stage.
- 5
Regulator-cleared or mass marketThis robot
A regulator has cleared it where approval applies: FDA clearance or approval for a medical robot, a permit to run with no one aboard for a self-driving vehicle, or an FAA approval for routine drone flights. Or: Widely sold: sales in the hundreds of thousands, or a product category you can buy in ordinary shops.
Placed by: Latvia's road safety agency approved FSD (Supervised), a driver-assistance system needing constant attention and sold in Europe as Tesla Assisted Driving, making Latvia the 10th EU country to allow it (26 Oct 2026).
- 4
Paying customers
Delivered to customers who pay for it, beyond a trial, or a paid service the public can use.
- 3
Pilot
Working with a named customer in a real setting, as a trial.
- 2
Pre-orders
Orders, reservations or deposits taken, with nothing delivered yet.
- 1
Demo only
Shown in videos, staged events or a factory, with no units working for customers.
What we couldn't confirm. We could not open sources for the reported 2026 upgrade of an NHTSA FSD probe to an Engineering Analysis (about 3.2 million cars), for the December 2023 Autopilot recall, or for the outcome of California DMV's false-advertising case over the 'Full Self-Driving' name. Musk's many past dated promises of full autonomy for owners' cars are not listed for the same reason.
